WRITING A WEDDING CEREMONY

One of the questions I am most often asked is whether there are any required words or format in a wedding ceremony. The answer is that there are absolutely no required words in a wedding ceremony. And while there is a common, or traditional format, there is also no required format. Your wedding ceremony can be whatever you desire. I have performed weddings that are very religious in nature; ones that you might hear in many of our churches. I have also performed ones that are almost not recognizable as a wedding ceremony. I performed a wedding that was entirely written in Dr. Seuss rhyme, one based on the readings of Mark Twain, and one out of Alice in Wonderland - to give you an idea of the variety of ceremonies people have written. While I do make suggestions on formats and verbiage, at the end-of-the-day, I perform the wedding ceremony that the couple has drafted.

While most of us have attended weddings, few pay sufficient attention to the ceremony and cannot draft one without some assistance. To make this task as pleasurable as possible, I supply couples with different formats, openings, closings, vows, etc. I also provide them with frequently used biblical verses, poems, and prose, as well as ring ceremonies, unity candle ceremonies, sand ceremonies, etc. I also encourage people to add anything that they have heard, in other ceremonies, or in movies, or on TV, that they would like in their ceremony. There is also a wealth of information on the Internet that can aid someone in drafting a ceremony. By utilizing these resources, and expending a reasonable amount of time, a couple can produce the wedding ceremony that reflects their feelings about marriage and how they feel about each other. Some couples find the process of working together to draft a wedding ceremony one of the more meaningful parts of the entire wedding experience.
